PDF to JPG tutorial
Functionality
PDF to JPG turns the pages of a PDF into images: JPG, PNG or WebP, at the resolution you need. Use it to post a page on social media, put a document into a presentation, send a single page as a picture or archive scans as images.
The PDF is opened and rendered by pdf.js directly in your browser, so contracts, invoices and ID documents never leave your device. Password-protected PDFs work too; the password is kept only while the page is open.
- Choose the pages: Leave "Pages" empty for all pages, or enter a selection such as 1-3, 5, 8- (8 to the end). The preview shows the first selected pages as thumbnails.
- Resolution: "72 dpi (screen)" gives small images, "150 dpi" suits most uses, "300 dpi (print)" keeps small print sharp. The preview shows the pixel size of the first page.
- JPG, PNG or WebP: JPG is the usual choice for pages with photos, PNG keeps text and lines crisp without compression artifacts, WebP is the smallest. "Quality" sets the compression for JPG and WebP.
- Protected PDFs: If a PDF needs a password, enter it under "Password". It is not stored and is used only to open the document in your browser.
- Clean file names: Pages are saved as report/report_p01.jpg, report_p02.jpg …, one folder per PDF. A single page downloads directly as an image.
How To Use The App
- Add a PDF: Click "Choose PDFs" or drop one or more PDF files onto the page.
- Check the pages: The preview shows the number of pages and thumbnails of the pages that will be saved.
- Select pages and resolution: Enter the pages under "Pages" (empty = all) and pick the "Resolution". For a protected PDF, also enter its "Password".
- Choose the format: Open the "Save" tab in the right sidebar and pick JPG, PNG or WebP under "Save as" and, for JPG or WebP, the "Quality".
- Convert: Under "Target", choose "ZIP download" or, in Chrome and Edge, "Choose output folder", then click "Convert pages" (with several PDFs, "Convert … PDFs").
Tips
- Very large pages (posters, plans) are limited to about 16 megapixels so every browser can render them; the preview notes this when the first page is affected.
- To combine images into a PDF instead, use Images to PDF. To copy the text of a scanned page, convert it here and use Image to Text.
Frequently asked questions
- How large are the images at 72, 150 and 300 dpi?
- An A4 page becomes about 595 × 842 pixels at 72 dpi, 1240 × 1754 at 150 dpi and 2480 × 3508 at 300 dpi; a US Letter page 612 × 792, 1275 × 1650 and 2550 × 3300. The preview shows the exact size of the first page. Use 300 dpi for printing and for reading small print with Image to Text.
- Can I convert several PDFs at once?
- Yes. Add several PDFs and click "Convert … PDFs": the pages of each PDF go into their own folder in the ZIP or output folder. The page selection and the password apply to every PDF; a PDF that cannot be opened or has none of the selected pages is skipped, the others are converted, and the skipped files are named after saving. If no PDF can be converted, nothing is saved and a message names the files.
- Can I extract the original photos from a PDF instead of whole pages?
- No. The tool renders each selected page as one image, as a PDF viewer shows it, with text and graphics. Pictures embedded in the page are not saved separately; to get one of them, convert the page and cut the picture out with Crop Images.
- Why do the images have a white background, even as PNG?
- Every page is rendered on white, the way a PDF viewer shows it, so areas without content are white in all three formats. To make the white transparent afterwards, run the saved PNG images through Remove White Background.
- Why did I get PNG files although I chose WebP?
- Your browser cannot create WebP images, so it returned PNG, and the tool names those files .png to match their content. Choose JPG for small files in that browser, or open the tool in a browser that can save WebP.
- Does my PDF leave the computer during the conversion?
- No. The PDF is opened and rendered by pdf.js inside your browser. The engine, its fonts and helper files are loaded from this site the first time you open a PDF, not from third-party servers, and the PDF itself is only read from your disk.
